Friday June 5th 2026 - Bramhall Golf Club

June's meeting was at the BRAMHALL GOLF CLUB near Stockport, and we were fortunate in having a dry afternoon in the middle of this damp spell of weather.  In fact it turned out to be a lovely afternoon, which started with an excellent putting session from Andrew Murray (former tour player and BBC golf pundit) arranged by Secretary Chris Edwards. The session was excellently presented and provided tips and advice to improve our skills. And of course everyone put it into practice in the afternoon on the tricky but generally excellent greens.

The course was a pleasure to play, very attractive visually with lovely tree lined fairways, and a sprinkling of water hazards to catch the unaware.... ie many of us!

The Results:

Winner of the June Trophy on a card play off:    Carl Cross 34 pts

                                                            2nd           Mike Stammers 34 pts

                                                            3rd            Michael Simonsen 32 pts

Mention should go to new member Rob McNulty who scored 35 pts but is ineligible for a prize until he has completed 3 rounds with the Society.

Longest Drive    Lee Morris

Ladies LD         Alison Hyde

NTP                   Peter Watson

NTP in 2           Michael Simonsen - Captains Prize

One 2 was scored by Sue O'Donnell with a fabulous second shot!

After the golf we enjoyed one of the best chicken dinners we have had anywhere, beautifully served by the staff at Bramhall in their lovely dining room. The tiramisu completed the dinner excellently.

John Wilson reported after the funeral of recently departed member Alan Dean, who died suddenly after a short illness. Alan was an excellent golfer, winning 2 trophies in 2025, and was a perfectionist in everything he tackled, which also included motor racing.  His passing was a shock to all of us and he will be much missed.

Friday May 15th The Hesketh Golf Club Southport

Another dry day, albeit cool and breezy for May, but the weather had dried the course leaving it with fast greens and firm fairways.  And with some of the rough being allowed to grow for Open qualifying it made for a tough challenge.  27 players signed up to enjoy the hospitality of the Hesketh and this concluded with a sumptuous lamb shank dinner served in the splendid dining room upstairs afterwards.  Thanks to Peter Watson and the other Hesketh members for making this possible.

John Wilson's apprentice requires more training for the role of carrying and placing markers on holes for NTP etc.

Prizes were as follows:

Nearest the Pin        Peter Hyde

NTP in 2                  Paul Yates

Ladies Longest Drive    Nuala Robinson

Men's LD                 Lee Morris

The Cochrane May Trophy is the oldest in the Society's collection, dating from 1993, was won by:

1st         Mary Bale 39 pts

2nd       Evan Bale 35 pts cpo

3rd        Mike Stammers 35pts.

We remembered Alan Dean in a reflection before dinner, who passed away suddenly recently.  He was a lovely chap and an excellent golfer, who will be much missed.

Next meeting is Bramhall Golf Club on June 5th.

March Trophy - Formby Ladies Friday 13th March 2026

Well Friday 13th duly arrived with an unpleasant weather forecast....we were all wrapped up and expecting the worst, and for the early starters the first few holes were tricky in a howling gale.  Then the wind eased a little and the sun appeared, making the later holes quite pleasant to play.  A bonus, no rain to speak of, so a good start to Captain Paul's year.

As for the Competition, the results were as follows:

1st     36 pts     Lee Morris, well done Lee.  Your golf has developed brilliantly over the year.

2nd    35 pts    Barrie Minero

3rd    33pts      Mike Simonsen in his shorts, yes you read correctly!

Longest Drive    Paul Yates

Ladies LD          Allison Hyde

NTP                   Peter Watson

NTP in 2            Paul Yates

Some familiar names there, well done all. We enjoyed a warming meal afterwards courtesy of the lovely staff.

Footnote:  Prior to playing the Society made a presentation to Formby Ladies Secretary Anne who was retiring. A pair of crystal goblets and a bottle of bubbly to fill them was donated as an appreciation of the society's involvement over the years at Formby Ladies GC.  Long may it continue.
